Dunecore vs Desertcore vs Darkwear vs Techwear: What's the Difference?

Dunecore, desertcore, darkwear and techwear are four overlapping style labels. Dunecore copies the robed, sand-toned look of the Dune films. Desertcore is the broader desert-survival look of sun-faded workwear and wraps. Darkwear is avant-garde dress built mostly in black, using drape and texture. Techwear is function-first clothing made from technical fabrics.

None of the four has an official definition. They are informal names used by shoppers, creators and the press. Below is how they are generally used, followed by the key pieces, palette and fabrics for each.

Dunecore

Dunecore grew out of Denis Villeneuve's films. Dune premiered at the Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021 and opened in U.S. theaters on October 22, 2021, with costumes by Jacqueline West and Bob Morgan (Wikipedia). Dune: Part Two opened on March 1, 2024 (Wikipedia). Glossy reported that brands were taking up its "retro-futuristic" look "both officially and unofficially". Bulgarian label Demobaza contributed looks worn in the film and released a tie-in collection. Dune: Part Three is scheduled for U.S. release on December 18, 2026 (Wikipedia).

Key pieces, palette and fabrics

  • Pieces: robes and long tunics, hooded wraps, scarves worn as cowls, and wide trousers.
  • Palette: sand, bone, khaki and dusty brown, with few strong colors.
  • Fabrics: suede or faux suede, matte cotton, and anything that drapes and moves in wind.

At GRIME STATE: the XIPHEVIL Deconstructed Utility Faux Suede Daoist Robe in Sand, with its asymmetrical hem, and the XIPHEVIL Fleece-Panel Saber-Sleeve Sweatshirt in Coffee, with its funnel neck and curved panels.

Desertcore

Desertcore takes in every way of dressing for heat, dust and distance, not just one film. The Impression's report on Spring 2022 menswear, "As Temperatures Rise, Designers Embrace Desert Punk", found neutral and sand colors, light fabrics and loose fits across the season's runways. It noted designers drawing on the dress of nomadic Saharan communities such as the Tuareg (The Impression). The Mad Max side of desertcore is rougher. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design (Wikipedia).

Key pieces, palette and fabrics

  • Pieces: utility vests, wide cargo pants, field jackets, scarves, bucket hats and fingerless gloves.
  • Palette: sand, rust, olive, khaki and faded denim.
  • Fabrics: washed cotton and canvas, dirt and mud dyes, and abrasion.

At GRIME STATE: the RELABEL Multi-Pocket Detachable Scarf Distressed Cargo in Coffee, the STEAM Distressed Paneled Hooded Jacket in a dirt-dyed finish the label calls "wasteland", and the ERROR CODE ROBOT Washed Rust Multi-Pocket Jacket.

Darkwear

Darkwear is the black side of avant-garde fashion. Highsnobiety's guide to dark and gothic fashion names Rick Owens, Yohji Yamamoto, Ann Demeulemeester, Jun Takahashi and Rei Kawakubo as pioneers, with Alexander McQueen, Boris Bidjan Saberi and Gareth Pugh among "the greats". Because almost everything is black, the interest comes from shape and texture: long layers, matte against shine, and raw against smooth surfaces.

Key pieces, palette and fabrics

  • Pieces: long layered tops, hoodies, flared or drop-crotch pants, bombers and leather jackets.
  • Palette: black, charcoal and washed black. A single dark red accent is common.
  • Fabrics: heavy jersey, crinkled cotton, raw or waxed denim, leather and PU.

At GRIME STATE: the UNDERWATER Bloodstained Raw Denim Jacket, the ULIPERY Dirty Fit Distressed Crinkled Hoodie in Black and the UNDERWATER Distressed Bondage MA-1 Jacket in Black.

Techwear

Techwear borrows from outdoor and military gear and brings it into the city. Its basic material is the waterproof, breathable membrane. NSS Magazine calls GORE-TEX "the first breathable, waterproof and windproof fabric" to reach the market (NSS). Labels such as Guerrilla Group and Riot Division build modular outerwear with detachable parts.

Key pieces, palette and fabrics

  • Pieces: shell jackets, chest rigs and tactical vests, multi-pocket cargo, quick-dry base layers and crossbody bags.
  • Palette: black, grey and olive, with occasional orange or other accent webbing.
  • Fabrics: nylon, membranes, mesh, and quick-dry knits such as modal.

At GRIME STATE: the XIPHEVIL Detachable Chest Bag Tactical Vest, the STEAM Paneled Quick-Dry Outdoor Long-Sleeve Tee and the UNDERWATER Dark Soul Waterproof Crescent Shoulder Bag. GRIME STATE carries techwear-leaning pieces rather than full technical systems, so check each product's description for its actual weather protection.

Where they meet: avant-apocalypse

FAQ

What is the difference between dunecore and desertcore?

Dunecore takes its look from the Dune films: long robes, hoods, draped wraps and sand tones. Desertcore is broader. It covers any desert-survival look, including Mad Max-style worn workwear, bandanas and sun-faded cargo. All dunecore is desertcore, but not the other way around.

Is darkwear the same as techwear?

No. Darkwear is defined by its black palette, drape and texture, and does not need technical fabrics. Techwear is defined by function: weatherproof fabrics, modular pockets and sealed closures. An all-black techwear outfit overlaps with both.

When is the next Dune movie coming out?

Dune: Part Three is scheduled for release in U.S. theaters on December 18, 2026. It is directed by Denis Villeneuve.

Can you mix these styles in one outfit?

Yes, and most people do. A common mix is a dunecore robe or wrap over techwear cargo pants. Keep the palette to two or three related tones so the outfit reads as one idea.
