Darkwear

Darkwear is a style built on an all-black or near-black wardrobe, where texture, cut and hardware do the work that color does elsewhere. The pieces here are black and charcoal designer clothing from independent labels on GRIME STATE: washed denim, padded bombers, gothic graphic tees and utility pants with real weight.

What defines darkwear

Darkwear draws on goth, techwear and avant-garde menswear, and its one fixed rule is a dark palette. Variety comes from surface and structure instead of color.

  • Texture contrast: washed black denim next to matte technical fabric, mesh, faux fur or quilting.
  • Finish: bloodstain-effect washes, bleaching, fading, slashed and frayed distressing.
  • Hardware: rivets, metal emblems, bondage straps and zip pockets.
  • Silhouette: boxy bombers, oversized hoodies, flared or wide-leg pants and close mock-neck base layers.

Labels in black

UNDERWATER supplies much of this collection, from the Bloodstained raw denim jacket and flared pants to a horned down vest with a detachable hood. ULIPERY adds bleached and mud-washed black cotton printed with industrial imagery. XIPHEVIL contributes black paneled cargo and jogger pants, and the SSIN7 Armored Panel Bomber Jacket brings a padded, leather-textured shell.

Wearing darkwear every day

An all-black outfit can look flat, so break it up with texture. Pair a washed denim jacket with a matte tee and technical pants, or a mesh long-sleeve under a padded vest. Keep one statement graphic or hardware detail per outfit so the silhouette stays clean. Darkwear is not only for winter evenings, either: water-repellent shorts and mesh jerseys keep the palette wearable in warm weather.
